The smoke canister brandished by Sunderland supporters at Peterborough on Sunday, may have caused issues for John & Dave, but spare a thought for our Greek counterpart presiding over the PAOK – Levadiakos match in Thessaloniki.
Whereas Sunderland’s excitement was short-lived as Peterborough equalised in the 91st minute, PAOK, who won the Greek title for the first time in 34 years celebrated in what they might call style but what we, as safety officers, would view as a nightmare.
The sheer number of incendiary devices all around the stadium was legendary and must surely have left the onlooking team in the Event Control Room blind for much of the time they were being let off.
The game finished 5-0 to PAOK, making them the first non-Athens club to win the title for 31 years. They have one match to go, are five points clear and haven’t lost a league match all season.
