City Fans Making a Difference to Help StudentsPeter Houghton
First-year students in Manchester and in particular those at the Municipal University are not getting the “Fresher” experience they bargained for. Almost as soon as they arrived on the Fallowfield Campus they were placed into lockdown as Covid-19 swept through their living quarters.
On local TV news bulletins we saw images of up to 1700 students pretty much imprisoned in their apartments, effectively not even allowed out to go shopping for food and other essentials They told us they had no means of washing their clothes nor bedding.
How refreshing it is to see the freshers assisted by Manchester City fans. MCFC Foodbank Support is a dedicated group of “Super Blues” who regularly collect food around the Etihad Campus on match days and distribute it to people in need. Typically this could be homeless persons out on the streets of Manchester or homeless missions who provide short-term accommodation solutions.
The support group have organised donations in excess of £100000 from both Manchester City and United for foodbanks in the region.
This is what the Manchester Evening News had to say….
