Crowd Safety Officer: Sheffield United Football Club

Job title: Crowd Safety Officer

Working hours: 40 hours per week, day and hours dependent on operational requirements

Salary: Competitive

 

Sheffield United Football Club are looking for a motivated and progressive thinking Crowd Safety Officer to join our Senior Leadership Team. As Crowd Safety Officer, the postholder will hold responsibility for adherence to the General Safety Certificate here at Bramall Lane Stadium and will place compliance at the heart of all they do. They will also take responsibility for Crowd safety duties during Sheffield United Women’s and our Under 23 fixtures which are held at an offsite facility. The successful candidate will have a passion for best practice and will inspire those with whom they work to ensure the safety of all who attend events at Bramall Lane stadium. As such, the successful candidate should demonstrate a strong attention to detail, with a continuous improvement mentality and a desire to continue to develop operational workings with specific reference to events held across our sites.

Role Responsibilities

  • To be responsible for the Crowd Safety strategy implemented at Sheffield United Football Club, communicating and embedding such strategy organisation wide.
  • To contribute to the evaluation and development of the operational strategy and performance in co-operation with the senior leadership team.
  • To hold responsibility for safety issues during any event where the Safety Certificate is applicable, such as Match Day fixtures, and any additional events scheduled at the Club.
  • The Crowd Safety Officer will represent the Club on safety issues prior to and during the event, with the Emergency Services, (i.e. South Yorkshire Police, and Fire and Ambulance services). The post holder will liaise directly with the Chief Licensing Officer of the Sheffield City Council and with the Sports Grounds Safety Authority Inspector.
  • To work with colleagues at the Club to identify and manage opportunities for the facilities that would create income such as rugby, concerts, end of season income generation football matches/cup finals and other sporting and non-sporting events.
  • The Crowd Safety Officer will liaise directly with the relevant Senior Leadership team member in respect of matters of Crowd safety relating to events scheduled at Bramall Lane Stadium and other SUFC sites.
  • The Crowd Safety Officer will maintain direct liaison with the host for match officials so that the Crowd Safety Officer knows their whereabouts at all times both before and after the event.
  • The Crowd Safety Officer will be responsible for relevant checks in and around the stadium on the run up to an event/match fixture including, but not exclusive to: reporting any defects/issues from the previous fixture and ensuring that these are rectified, ensuring that the fire warning and automatic fire detection systems are tested and action taken to rectify any faults found, a physical inspection of the stadium ensuring that there are no hazards which will come to impact spectator safety, inspection of turnstile functionality with the relevant team members at the Club, the physical checking and efficient functioning of all emergency and final exit gates and ensuring that all exit and directional signage is in place.
  • To liaise with the Police Match Commander regarding the safety procedures for the whole event.
  • To liaise with Event Medical Services, to arrange sufficient first aid personnel in accordance with the directions contained in the General Safety Certificate
  • To ensure that the relevant Safety equipment and systems are tested prior to any events held at Bramall Lane and rectify any faults where necessary.
  • The Crowd Safety Officer will be in attendance in the Stadium Control Room at all times where an event is taking place.
  • To conduct a post-match inspection of the stadium, ensuring that all de-brief reports from the Security and Stewarding team are considered, actioned and that any issues are rectified.
  • The Crowd Safety Officer will produce Contingency Plans to cater for the Clubs response to any incident likely to affect public safety inside or in the immediate environs of Bramall Lane stadium.
  • To ensure that the Stewarding team at Bramall Lane are up to date with relevant training within the field, and schedule continued professional development sessions where this is required to ensure that all colleagues are trained in relevant protocols and procedures in relation to Crowd Safety.

Essential Criteria for the role

  • Achievement of the NVQ Level 4 in Event Safety Management.
  • A broad understanding of the current health and safety policy and agenda.
  • Experience of being able to implement and manage safety procedures at all levels.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build rapport with a wide range of stakeholders, adopting a collaborative approach.
  • A wide range of knowledge and experience of safety issues in relation to sporting venues specifically.
  • Presentation, report writing and public speaking skills to feedback to key stakeholders on matters of Crowd Safety.
  • A positive, can-do approach with the ability to motivate the colleagues with whom you work and implement development strategies organisation wide.
  • A continuous improvement mentality, with experience of leading and implementing change.

Desirable Criteria for the role

 

  • Completion of a Major Sporting Events Course would be advantageous.
  • Accreditation to a recognised National Health and Safety course.
