EFL Restart Happens Tonight With League 2 Play-offsPeter Houghton
Following the success of last night’s Premier League restart, the EFL gets its season back under way tonight with the first legs of the League 2 play-offs.
Although the League 2 season fixtures were curtailed, mechanisms were put in place to decide the final positions on a points-per-game basis and this evening will see Colchester United play Exeter City followed by Northampton Town hosting Cheltenham Town.
The complex financing arrangements and the total cost of restarting their league behind closed doors meant that the owners decided that curtailment of the season was the best solution, which is a great shame as this division provides not only the opportunity for clubs to progress to League 1 but also the trapdoor into the National League and deep down I’m sure all clubs would have preferred to finalise the season “in their own hands”, but without the income streams of attending supporters it was not deemed practical.
The FSOA wishes all four clubs all the best in the semi-finals. The second legs take place next Monday, 22 June 2020.
