FC Porto Player Substituted After Racial Abuse at Vitoria GuimaraesPeter Houghton
This may well be the first instance of a player leaving the field of play and being replaced by a substitute following racially aggravated abuse.
Moussa Marega scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the match on the hour. Having already been subject to abused based upon the colour of his skin, he was seen to make a number of retaliatory gestures before leaving the field of his own volition. Despite attempts from teammates to persuade him to remain, he removed himself and had to be replaced.
He later said that he received no protection from the referee and that the home fans had been particularly nasty. Maybe the 3-point plan doesn’t apply in Portugal!!
We need to be aware that it is only a matter of time before something like this happens in one of our stadiums. We’ve seen instances in the National Leagues, but nothing quite as high profile as this, where FC Porto are challenging Benfica at the top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
