HONORARY PRESIDENT OF THE FOOTBALL SAFETY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION FOR ENGLAND AND WALES
Jim would describe himself as a senior citizen who is married with two daughters and three grandchildren.
He served from 1959 to 1991 in the Birmingham City and West Midlands Police retiring in the rank of Chief Superintendent. At the time of his retirement Jim was the Police Commander at Villa Park, Birmingham.
On his retirement Jim became one of the original members of the Football Licensing Authority Inspectorate and served with the Authority until his retirement in 2003. During his time with the FLA Jim was a major contributor in working with the football authorities in the development of steward training and assessment.
Following retirement from the FLA Jim took up the post of Deputy Safety Officer at Kidderminster Harriers F.C., a post he still holds. In 2005 he was elected President of the Football Safety Officers Association and as a member of the Executive he remains very active in working to improve the Association and its service to our members.
Jim is proud of the fact that at the age of 65 he graduated from the University of Portsmouth with his BSc in Risk and Security Management. Since then he has continued to develop his professional competencies in becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management and a Graduate of the City and Guilds Institute. Jim is unique in that he holds two Level 4 NVQ’s in Spectator Safety Management and in 2008 he was awarded the City and Guilds Gold Medal for Excellence for outstanding performance in the Sport and Recreation sector. In the same year he received the City and Guilds Lions Award for Life Long Learner of the Year.
In 2005 Jim achieved one of his life long ambitions when with Professor Steve Frosdick he co-wrote a book entitled ‘Safety and Security at Sports Grounds’. In 2011, again with Professor Frosdick, Jim co-wrote a second book on the subject titled ‘More Safety and Security at Sports Grounds’.
Jim is a life long supporter of Aston Villa F.C. but hopes that people will not think too unkindly of him because of this.
