An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Stadium Operations Manager at The John Smith’s Stadium in Huddersfield.


The Stadium, owned and operated by Kirklees Stadium Development Limited (KSDL), is home to Huddersfield Town Football Club and Huddersfield Giants Super League Club. The Stadium is situated on a 52 acre site and incorporates a 24,400 seater Stadium, Conference and Banqueting Suites, Health & Fitness Centre, Swimming Pool, 9-screen Cinema, Costa Coffee and Pizza Hut.


In addition to managing Huddersfield Town and Huddersfield Giants matches, we also host International Football and Rugby matches and also Pop Concerts.


The role is full time and is complex and challenging but has support from an experienced event management team at one of the North’s Premier Football and Rugby Stadiums. The salary for this position is negotiable depending on qualifications and experience. Main Purpose of the Job
To oversee and manage the day to day running of The John Smith’s Stadium site, buildings, fixtures,
fittings and furnishings to deliver a compliant Stadium fit for playing professional and International
Football and Rugby League/Union matches and Pop Concerts, ensuring all appropriate rules, regulations and legislation are adhered to.
To maintain the required health and safety standards throughout the organisation and the security at the
Stadium, working closely with all tenants, partners, colleagues and senior managers to form strong
working relationships.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
1 Overall responsibility of the 52 acre Stadium site and the provision of services including Car
Park Management, Landscaping, Waste Management and Security throughout the year, as
agreed with the Managing Director.
2 To liaise with Stadium Tenants and Partners in relation to site operations and maintenance,
including Huddersfield Town FC, Huddersfield Giants RL, the Odeon Cinema and Kirklees Active
3 In conjunction with the Stadium Operations Consultant, assist and advise the Managing
Director in developing and implementing major capital expenditure projects.
4 To work with the Managing Director to set annual maintenance budgets and manage those
budgets throughout the year to ensure expenditure is within the agreed parameters.
5 Along with other Senior Managers, to attend and represent the Company at Safety Advisory
Group meetings, working closely with the Licensing Authority and Building Control at Kirklees
Council and all other emergency services, including West Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire
Ambulance Service and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.
6 To act as the nominated Deputy Safety Certificate Holder in the absence of the Managing
7 To attend Events Panel Meetings to review and discuss match and event planning with the
tenant clubs, along with the Managing Director, Stadium Event Manager and the Safety
8 With the assistance of the M&E Manager, to ensure all plant and machinery is maintained in
accordance with manufacturers manuals, to oversee planned and preventative maintenance
schedules and to put in place necessary maintenance contracts, including all catering kitchens
and kiosks and some aspects of the Stadium Swimming Pool and Health & Fitness Suite.
9 To manage the operational elements of the energy contracts and waste contracts, as
negotiated by the Managing Director.
10 Working with the Managing Director, procure other contracted services such as washroom
services and contract cleaning, as required.
11 To ensure that the fire fighting and fire alarm systems are maintained and tested in
accordance with manufacturers directions. Initiate, record and monitor regular fire drills.
12 Overall management responsibility for fire evacuation procedures, ensuring all egress routes
and methods of escape are planned, tested, documented and reviewed on a regular basis; that
plans are in place for daily opening and closing of the site and buildings and that all
stakeholders and employees are aware of the procedures and their role in an evacuation.
13 To work with our in-house caterers to ensure all appropriate health and safety and risk
assessment documentation is in place in relation to the service provision of food and drink to
the general public, including equipment in kitchens and kiosks.
14 Manage all repair and refurbishment programmes for all conference and banqueting areas in
the Stadium, as directed by the Managing Director.
15 To effectively manage the team of employees responsible to you for general maintenance and
indoor and outdoor cleaning.
16 To ensure all Health and Safety Documentation, Risk Assessments and Operating Procedures
and Policies are up to date and comply with current legislation, including documentation on
COSHH on all hazardous materials.
17 To liaise with our Tenants and Partners on site to ensure they have their own Health and
Safety Policies which are kept up to date with current legislation.
18 Overall responsibility to ensure that all managers and staff operate within Health and Safety
and COSHH Regulations at all times, ensuring appropriate working practices are safe and staff
are trained and issued with appropriate PPE.
19 Along with the Event Manager, organise and manage major events at the Stadium, ie
International Rugby and Football matches and Pop Concerts, as negotiated by the Managing
20 Assist in the recruitment and selection of staff and carry out grievance and disciplinary
procedures as appropriate.
21 Working with the Safety Officer, ensure the Stadium and staff are kept up to date with current
Terrorist threat levels and procedures to follow in the event of a terrorist attack or threat.
22 With the assistance of the M&E Manager, to monitor and supervise all external contractors
working at the Stadium and to ensure risk assessments and method statements are in place
prior to any work being carried out on the Stadium site.
23 Attend and investigate any accidents that take place on matchdays or non-matchdays,
ensuring maintenance of the Accident Book. Ensure RIDDOR reports as appropriate in line
with current guidelines.
24 To ensure all requirements of the General Safety Certificate are met on match and event days.
25 To act as the Company’s Data Controller under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
26 To work on all home matchdays and major events (subject to annual leave).
Knowledge, Experience and Skills
Proven managerial experience working in a Sports Stadium environment;
Good working knowledge of applicable site / industry regulations and codes of practice;
Track record for managing contracts for services, understanding value and costs;
Experience of collaborating with multiple stakeholders;
Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation, in particular the Green Guide and the Purple Guide;
Confident decision maker, strong communication skills and good interpersonal skills;
Experienced manager of staff;
Good organizational skills and works well under pressure and has flexibility to deal with issues out of
hours and at short notice;
Good MS Office skills.

NVQ Level 4 in Spectator Safety Management desirable but not essential;
Health and Safety qualification desirable but not essential;
