Teams Off In South of France “Derby”Peter Houghton
The South of France “derby” between OGC Nice and Olympique de Marseilles created a stir last week when the match referee, Clement Turpin, ordered the players to withdraw from the field due to homophobic chanting and a homophobic banner which was unveiled in the stands.
I believe that this is the first time a high-profile top league match has been halted in this way and could set the blueprint for others.
In March of this year, FFL president Nathalie Boy de la Tour said that homophobic chants were part of the culture of the sport. “It’s part of the folklore,” she said.
I’m sure there are many of us that disagree with that and who would not like to see this type of activity replicated in our grounds.
