Valley Parade – 35 Years On
Today marks a staggering 35 years since what was probably the worst disaster in the history of English football. The fire at Bradford City’s Valley Parade stadium played out on live TV remains the forgotten disaster, the invisible disaster.
On this day in 1985, 56 football fans went to see their team play and never came home. There is no fanfare, no ongoing campaigns, simply grief.
This year there is the added poignancy that the City team manager on that day was Trevor Cherry, who sadly died suddenly on 29 April 2020..
The team captain that day was Peter Jackson, who I had the pleasure of meeting in much happier circumstances raising funds for the homeless in Kirklees & Calderdale last year, himself having flown back from holiday to be part of it.
