It’s almost a weekly event now, but once again penalties and racism appear to go hand-in-hand whenever a black footballer is concerned.
Over the weekend, there were two more events that once again cast a shadow over our game.
The first came from a quite unlikely source – Hartlepool United v Dover Athletic which ended 0-2 to the visitors. With the award of a penalty to Dover, racist abuse was aimed at Inih Effiong, who eventually took the 37th minute penalty and scored.
The behaviour sparked an air of disbelief among the Pools hierarchy with the Chief Executive issuing a hard-hitting statement. Let’s hope that if the culprits can be found and there is sound evidence, they are handed over to the Police.
Meanwhile, over in Italy Serie A newcomers and Champions League opponents of Manchester City, Atalanta, saw their match with Fiorentina temporarily suspended as visiting Dalbert told the referee on a number of occasions he was being targeted.
